CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“There’s nothing,” Tara said, calling over to Glenn. She wiped the back of a hand across her forehead. She was getting more and more uncomfortable by the minute.

Glenn emerged from behind the cabin, walking back around toward her. He shook his head. “No one’s home. He’s not just hiding in there. I looked through all the windows.”

“He could have locked himself in the bathroom,” Tara suggested.

“No, the door’s open,” Glenn replied. “And there’s more. I could see a couple of guns up on the wall. Three mounts, two guns.”

“He’s got one with him,” Tara translated.

“He’s probably out there hunting,” Glenn said. “From what I know, he covers the area pretty nearby. Far enough from the cabin that the wildlife isn’t afraid to walk, and not much further.”

Tara nodded, thinking carefully. They couldn’t just go and come back. If they did, Weston would have time to hear about the fact they were after him and get out of Dodge. Not to mention that he could destroy any evidence that might be in the small three-room cabin.

It was a small cabin, now that Tara thought of that. A bedroom, open-plan living space, and a bathroom. Was there space in there for what Miley Piper had described? Was it clean enough, tidy enough, to represent that empty bedroom she had talked about?

There was no point in debating that with herself now. She had to make a decision. Bring Tim Weston in one way or another and see what he had to say, protect the evidence, and then figure it out from there.

“We have to find him,” she said. Part of her was reluctant to suggest it, but what choice did they have? “We’ll head into the woods and split up.”

“Split up?” Glenn started. His brown eyes opened wide. “Tara, do you think that’s wise?”

“What would be unwise would be going through the woods together and letting him easily slip past us back to the cabin,” Tara countered. “We’ve got to bring him in, Glenn. That’s what matters right now. If we can’t find him, we’ll go from there.”

Glenn once again looked like he was swallowing back an objection, trying to respect her decision. He nodded curtly. “Guns out though, right?”

“Keep it pointed low,” Tara advised. “We don’t want any accidents. And if you see a particular shade of olive green, for God’s sake, don’t shoot.”

Glenn smirked at her last warning, a reference to the color of their uniforms. “I won’t shoot you.”

“Good,” Tara said, then pointed in the direction of the trees. “You go that way; I’ll go this way. Once you find him, if you do, holler. I’ll do the same.”

Glenn nodded again, clenched his jaw, and then turned to walk in the direction she had indicated. In a funny kind of way, seeing him ignore his nerves to get the job done enabled Tara to do the same. After sending him off into the woods, she couldn’t exactly refuse to go herself. She squared her shoulders and walked forward, heading right between the trees.
